The Happy Jug

2015

A post-human drama about brain trauma, thing theory and the general election.

monoliths interpose themselves
to create a grippingly weird, heart-wrenching
theatre piece. a psycho-drama of high personal and political stakes

did the anointing of a totem change the past?
what anaesthetises the social body?
can you reprogram flesh?

a hyper-modern ensemble of verbatim dialogue
intra-diegesic voice and bass treatment by KEPLA set to motion-tracked
video composition by SIMON JONES and CHRIS BOYD
and MADELINE HALL’s concrete and plaster
as dramatic focal points, enacting
speculative philosophy and
…a small tube of superglue
in NATHAN JONES’ text
like a lucky charm sits inside its chest…

Torque#2. The act of reading

2015

FACT, Liverpool

Furtherfield Gallery, London

A virtual ka-mera scans a phantom shrouded figure in an anechoic chamber. Linear text bursts into an asignifying swarm where the letter C escapes and descends into a presignifying regime, breaks free from its carapace/shroud and mutates into primitive biological forms and mark making.

[cthorsion scrypt fantomsens] was made in response to a symposium, Torque #2 in FACT, Liverpool, that reflects upon the plasticity of the brain, the adaptability of technology and the malleability of language, and their twisting together through past, present and future cultures. Work in progress was screened during the symposium at FACT exploring how and what we read today, with speakers Katherine Hayles, Garrett Stewart, Esther Leslie, Nina Power, Soenke Zehle, Alex Leff, Stephen fortune and Hannah Proctor. The animation was installed at the Furtherfield Gallery, London for the exhibition: being being read being reading being read and reading beings

Absences

2014

Poetry by Michael Aaron Kamins

"It has been said that the poet’s job is to make the invisible environment that surrounds and captures us visible in his writings—it is invisible because it has fallen beneath the threshold of perception—and this is exactly what Michael Aaron Kamins has done in his poetry cycle 'Absences' in a kind of shamanic feat wherein, utilizing a modern equivalent of the shaman’s ancient ability to illuminate the hidden skeletal structures of plants and animals, he has made visible for us the internal semiotic anatomy of our present global civilization....Kamins runs off to trace out his own creative line of flight along an arc of glittering verbal virtuosity that is absolutely dazzling, and specifically designed to hypnotize and narcotize the reader into an altered state of consciousness wherein, in visionary form, the hidden skeleton of the internal lines of globalization start to become visible all around him...Kamins’s performance as a first time poet here is an astonishing achievement of verbal incantation and neo-electric shamanism.” From the Afterword by John David Ebert

Halftrack Atrocity speed reader version

Torque #1

The video employs a new typeface (designed by Sam Skinner) that accentuates the areas in letters where contours intersect - a key feature of the visual system and object recognition. Thus the typeface, like speed reading, is simultaneously both less and more legible and readable.

Link Editions

Edited by Nathan Jones and Sam Skinner, this collection of essays and artworks reflects upon the plasticity of the brain, the adaptability of technology and the malleability of language, and their twisting together through past, present and future cultures. The contributors and their work presented within, each offer unique models of navigating this territory, making their own artefacts, writing their own scripts, forging critical space and examining the blindspots. “Torque activities and this publication bravely push our boundaries of cognition and thinking, through striking essays, tricky concepts, and beautiful, arresting imagery.” Professor Mike Stubbs, Artistic Director, FACT Liverpool.

A delirious text capturing the cognitive dissonance caused by a picnoleptic crash. Text and code collide as floating signifiers propel themselves over digital noise.
