A virtual ka-mera scans a phantom shrouded figure in an anechoic chamber. Linear text bursts into an asignifying swarm where the letter C escapes and descends into a presignifying regime, breaks free from its carapace/shroud and mutates into primitive biological forms and mark making.
[cthorsion scrypt fantomsens] was made in response to a symposium, Torque #2 in FACT, Liverpool, that reflects upon the plasticity of the brain, the adaptability of technology and the malleability of language, and their twisting together through past, present and future cultures. Work in progress was screened during the symposium at FACT exploring how and what we read today, with speakers Katherine Hayles, Garrett Stewart, Esther Leslie, Nina Power, Soenke Zehle, Alex Leff, Stephen fortune and Hannah Proctor. The animation was installed at the Furtherfield Gallery, London for the exhibition: being being read being reading being read and reading beings

Poetry by Michael Aaron Kamins

The video employs a new typeface (designed by Sam Skinner) that accentuates the areas in letters where contours intersect - a key feature of the visual system and object recognition. Thus the typeface, like speed reading, is simultaneously both less and more legible and readable.
